PROGRAM NOTES

Les Adieux (2009, rev. 2013) is inspired by Beethoven’s piano sonata no. 26, the “farewell” sonata. My composition, shaped by formal subdivisions that amalgamate emotions of separation, absence and return, culminates in a musical quote from Beethoven’s composition at the formal axis of the work. The instrumentation of two violins unfolds the sonic qualities of one instrument represented by two performers. Though much of the composition will be based on collectively employed musical textures, there will be room for individual expression within a given performance. Consequently, the composition will make entirely virtuosic demands in terms of instrumental range, articulation, and technical difficulties. Les Adieux suggests a choreographed performance in which the musicians engage in a physical representation in different areas of the concert space, but it can also be presented as a concert piece. Friedrich Heinrich Kern
