la chair est triste, hélas! et j'ai lu tous les livres.
fuir ! là-bas fuir! je sens que des oiseaux sont ivres
d'être parmi l'écume inconnue et les cieux !

notes
The predicament of a writer to transcend plain verse into an imaginative evocation echoes the parameters of a composer: My instrumentation of a harp, flute and a soprano scuro displays an elusive sound world. However, it wonderfully bridges formal and syntactical gaps in Mallarmé’s expression, and it allows depicting the overly saturated emotional state the writer brings into existence. Formally, a brief entry introduces the various sonic demands that Mallarmé’s surpassing language invites for. Sparsely colored, the texture introduces both instruments and prepares for the introduction of the soprano. Now slightly more animated, the color of the voice blends into the dawdling introduction. The continuing measures originate in the fast changing mood of the poem. Je partirai! – the determination to escape the scenery unfolds in a climax, which rapidly exhausts the accumulated frustration and anxiety. Mallarmé’s idée fixe of escaping his world describes the unreasonable attempt to attain another more optimistic state of mind. Vague notions of doubt embody the instruments to sense the near end as the Brise calms down. Inevitably, the limbo ends quickly in ambiguity.
