"...pour une seule nuit" is inspired by feelings of solitude and farewell. My composition, shaped by formal subdivisions that amalgamate emotions of separation, absence, and return, culminates in a placid, unexpected epilogue at the work's climax. The instrumentation unfolds the sonic idea of the string quartet as one "instrument," represented by four performers. Though much of the composition is based on collectively employed musical textures, there will be room for individual expression within a given performance. Consequently, the piece makes entirely virtuosic demands in terms of each performer's instrumental range, articulation, and technical difficulties. - Friedrich Heinrich Kern
